Our History
Loreto Convent Shillong was
begun in 1909 by Mother Mechtilde Costello for the
education of the children of the tea garden areas of Assam
and for Anglo-Indians. To suit the needs of the area it
was a boarding school for girls and young boys were also
kept till Class 3. it prepared girls for the Senior
Cambridge and later the ICSE.
In the seventies the State
Board exam was introduced.
When it was found that
students on transfer were not able to get admission easily
in other states the school reverted to the ICSE Board in
2001.
Past pupils remember with
affection the long low buildings with wooden floors and
"okhra" walls as well as the small numbers in
each class which gave the school and the hostel a very
homely atmosphere.
A major fire in 1943
necessitated new constructions. Another fire on Christmas
day in 1972 destroyed the Forbes Hall and the new hall was
completed in 1975.
As the numbers increased it
became necessary to rebuild the school in the sixties. A
double storeyed building was put up for the secondary
school classes.
The boarding school was
closed in the eighties and the dormitories converted into
the present library, computer room and offices.
The old Teachers' Cottage
now houses a small group of girls from far off villages
who want to go to college in the town.
