OUR HISTORY
Loreto Bowbazar was
established in 1844, the second school to be started by
the Loreto sisters in Calcutta. It was known as St.Francis
Xavier Convent and was originally a private school owned
by the Coopers. There was a Pay school with some boarders,
and a Free school. Boys
and girls were admitted.
In
1882 the neighbouring property was acquired to accommodate
the growing numbers, 300 pupils at that time.
In
1884 the grounds of the free school were required to build
the new church of St. Francis Xavier, so another building
was erected on the new plot for the Free School which was
called St. Francis Xavier’s while the main school was
called Loreto Day School.
In
the 1970s the number of pupils had increased so much that
it was necessary to build more classrooms. The old
Francis Xavier building was demolished and the
present school buildings with their large airy rooms was
erected.
In
1974 the Higher Secondary section was introduced,
affiliated to the West Bengal Education Council since the
school leaving examination had previously been changed
from the Metric to the Madhyamik Pariksha of West Bengal.
The
free School continued to function separately till the
1980s when the children were gradually absorbed into the
main school stream.
In
1990 a literacy programme was begun and continues today as
the Ashadeep school.
In
2002 the Nursery class was discontinued.
In
2005 a new move was made by the Loreto administration in
the appointment of a
Lay teacher, Mrs.Marie Gasper, as Principal of the school.
