Outreach Programmes
PUSHPA VIDYALAYA – An Outreach
programme of St. Agnes’ Loreto Day School - Lucknow
Our
outreach school, Pushpa Vidyalaya, is situated in our
school compound. It
was initially started by the nuns in 1948 as a literacy
class for the children of the domestic staff of Loreto
Convent and St. Agnes’ with an enrollment of
approximately 20-30 children.
The enrollment increased considerably after a
separate building was erected in 1977.
Pushpa Vidyalaya is now a primary school which
caters to the education of approximately 320 students
(boys & girls). It
has a staff of ten trained teachers. Apart from academics,
the children are taught dancing, singing, needlework,
craft, and many other skills which can be of use to them
in the future. They
also take an active part in games and physical education. A mid-day meal is provided for the children of Pushpa
Vidyalaya daily. This is possible because of supplies of bulgar and oil
received from the Catholic Relief Services and the
generosity of the senior pupils
of St.
Agnes’ who contribute vegetables and cereals on a
rotation basis. This
meal has proved very beneficial in keeping these deprived
children healthy.
Special
emphasis is laid on games and P.T.
Our P.T.I. successfully trained the older students
for Kho-Kho and Football which they enjoy playing.
For
the benefit of parents and students, attractive and
educative bulletin boards are prepared for display on the
school corridor.
Every
year 100 girl students from Pushpa Vidyalaya
enthusiastically celebrate The Day of the Girl Child by
participating in a day long programme organized by UNICEF
at the Cathedral Hall.
They are always thrilled with the useful gifts and
food packets that they receive. Transport is generously provided to us by a well wisher.
The
Gandhi Corner of La Martiniere Girls’ College annually
invites the girls from Class II upwards to participate in
a day long programme at their college. They eagerly take part in cultural items, art competitions
and sports, in which several of them usually win
prizes.
The
feast of St. Teresa (the Patroness of
Pushpa Vidyala) is celebrated on 1st
October. The
students of St. Agnes’ Loreto Day School play a major
part in this event.
A large number of children are provided with
uniforms, books and stationery. Transport is arranged for
those who would otherwise remain away from school due to
distance and lack of money.
A few capable and
promising students
are helped to continue their education after they
leave Pushpa Vidyalaya .
The
happy family atmosphere fostered in this institution has
resulted in the students coming regularly and happily to
school.
